Imee Hernandez will no longer be playing out her remaining years with University of Santo Tomas.
The 5-foot-11 middle blocker has decided to forgo her remaining three years with the Golden Tigresses as she is set to join a Premier Volleyball League club.
The 22-year-old native of Bulacan made the announcement on Thursday.
“It feels like only yesterday when a skinny little girl from Baliwag arrived in España, Manila, filled with uncertainty and excitement. But that was back in 2014. My knowledge of the game, which eventually changed the course of my life, was very simple. I had nothing to offer, yet you embraced me without hesitation. You saw in me the potential I never recognized. This community believed in me, and because of your unwavering love and support throughout the years, I reached new heights and achieved many personal goals,” her post read.
“That is why this is, by far, the hardest letter I have ever written. UST community, you have been with me through all the battles, and I am forever grateful. Now that I have completed my studies, with you by my side, I am more than ready to face the bigger challenges that lie ahead as I continue to pursue my passion for the game of volleyball on a grander stage and under brighter lights. I have decided to turn professional.”
Hernandez, a product of UST’s girls’ volleyball program, was already in college back in 2019 but the UAAP Season 82 tournament was cut short due to the pandemic.
Along with good pal Eya Laure, the duo would steer UST to back-to-back final four finishes in Seasons 84 and 85.
However, their final four game against eventual champion De La Salle University last May 3 will be the last time she would don UST’s black and gold.
“If only I could express to each and every one of you who supports the black and gold how difficult this decision is for me. UST is a place that will never be easy to part with, not just for me but for most of us athletes who remain here as well,” her post continued.
“However, I feel it in my heart that I must take this step for my own growth, not just as an athlete, but as an individual. I pray that with this decision, you will continue to support me all the way.”
With Hernandez’s departure, Laure will also forgo her last playing year as well.
According to multiple sources closely monitoring the situation, the two will sign with the same club,along with a trio of former rivals.
