Miss USA mocks non-English speaking Miss Universe contestants (photos, video)

The 2018 Miss Universe competition is under way, and America’s representative is already facing scrutiny.

Miss USA 2018 Sarah Rose Summers is being called a “Mean Girl” after video showed her mocking non-English speaking contestants in this year’s pageant, being held in Thailand. In an Instagram Live video, the 24-year-old Nebraska beauty queen was asked by Miss Colombia Valerai Morales what she thought of Miss Vietnam H’Hen Nie.

Summers responded by imitating Nie, giggling with Miss Australia Francesca Hung.

“She’s so cute and she pretends to know so much English and then you ask her a question after having a whole conversation with her and she goes,” Summers said, nodding and smiling to demonstrate.

According to TMZ, Summers issued an apology after her comments went viral.

“In a moment where I intended to admire the courage of a few of my sisters, I said something that I now realize can be perceived as not respectful, and I apologize," she said on Instagram.

“My life, friendships, and career revolve around me being a compassionate and empathetic woman. I would never intend to hurt another. I am grateful for opportunities to speak with Nat, Miss Cambodia, and H’Hen, Miss Vietnam, directly about this experience. These are the moments that matter most to me.”

Nie and Sinat have not responded to Summers.

Preliminary competitions this week have included contestants in swimsuits, evening wear and national costume presentations. The final will air live from Bangkok, Thailand on Sunday, Dec. 16 at 7 p.m. ET on Fox.
